If you are still running Windows 7, MS free support ends on Tuesday, January 13th 2015..

So what does it mean in practice, now that Windows 7 is no longer supported for free? Microsoft will not offer free help and support if you have technical problems, and there will be no new features too. However, do you know anyone that has ever actually called Microsoft with a problem? Most people use that all-knowing fountain of knowledge called Google to resolve any technical issues they may have…

It isn't really a big deal. None of my customer have ever had a problem with Windows 7 that made me have to call Microsoft. January 2020 is going to be another story. Not worried about that either, yet.

I've never contacted MS about Win7 or any OS. Neither have my clients. It's supported for 5 more years with extended and bug patches.

There is one thing that would still qualify for free support, at least until 2020. If you have an issue with security updates they will take your call.

Yeah, but there's a BIG difference between Vista & Win7. LOL!

I've never had a problem with any Win 7 machine, it's been their most stable well running OS version to date imho.

XP support just ended within the last year or two. I'm not seeing the connection here. It held on forever.

With that said, I didn't realize that they'd dropped support for Vista already too...Did they?

In any case, I've never contacted them for support just like most others who've commented here.

EDIT: Yup. XP support ended in 2013. Nothing was done to force users onto Vista. They held on to XP because so many people complained about Vista.

Yeah, XP was a decent running version as well. Vista was just a joke. The only problem with 8 was their attempt to make it mainly a touchscreen based OS, and this was when touchscreen based laptops were still so new, people were hesitant to get onboard. Win 8.1 cleared that right up and is a decent OS version.

It's funny how some people said buy new with Win7 and avoid the latest. And Win8 wasn't around very long.

I've had no issues, and MS customer service is HORRIBLE. They either do not know much or they are paid to steer you toward buying new software instead of fixing your problem. Two different calls/issues that happened to me with and I ended-up cussing both of them out (something I rarely do, but these people were either lying or just plain incompetent).

Anyway, I usually HAVE to upgrade my laptop every 3-4 years (too many drops)...Usually pretty dated tech by then, too, so that's when I upgrade software.

Exactly! When nobody would buy the new OS....Microsoft shifted gears and kept support for XP. Then all new computers where loaded with Vista. And Microsoft introduced downgrading rights. This is just a money ploy! I will never buy 8. I well never recommend 8.

And there not even going to release a service pack 2 for Windows 7 !! Over 400 updates if you clean install SP1 right now! That is almost double what you have to install with XP. But I know they haven't released any new updates for XP in some time now.

I still don't see the correlation between 8=vista & 7=xp. This obviously proves that MS isn't holding onto 7 like they did xp. Xp was 12 years old in 2013 when they ended support. 7 is 5 years old.

Used to be a clean Windows install wasn't that big of a deal. Now you do it and you have to wait for 400 updates to download and install (with all the rebooting in between).

No SP2...Ha!...Go ahead and just TRY to find a Windows ISO directly from MS.

Are you confusing actual support with just patching security updates? I don't think they direct supported XP all that long, just as you mentioned security updates for many years.
