Facebook check-in notifications - DO NOT WANT

I keep getting notifications any time my friends check in somewhere, and it's driving me crazy. I have been trying for days to figure out how to turn them off, but to no avail.
Any suggestions?

(I still want to keep getting notifications when people post on my wall and things like that, but just not when they check in to a new place every fifteen minutes.)

Shouldn't there be an option to not receive these sorts of things? My old fb app doesn't have in the settings but yours might. Worst comes to worst you can turn notifications to inactive.
