Droid Screen and SMS Help

Recently the screen on my phone stopped working (imagine running your computer, but turning your monitor off. its the same idea) im covered under my extended warranty so im just waiting on my replacement phone however i was wondering if there was a way i could view my txt messages through my computer or maybe someone would could walk me through the steps on how to back up my rom through clockwork mod recovery .the fact that i can't see will be a little tricky cause i'll never really know if im the recovery menu or not, but i figure if i hold x and power long enough i'll be in there. So if someone could just tell me, go up twice, press okay, down three times press okay or something similar that would be awesome, thank you. My phone still works, i still get text messages and phone calls, i just cant see any of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
