Dangerously low on space

i hope someone reads these old boards. i'm still using an older tablet and i keep getting 'dangerously low on space' messages. i have practically nothing on this tablet yet i'm out of space. going into device maintenance and tapping on storage i have a total of 15.8 GB on the tablet being used out of 16GB. i have 818kb of documents, 55.6mb of images, 5.26mb of audio, 0mb of video, and 4.2 GB of apps. also there is an sd card with 34GB/58.5GB being used. are there hidden files? what is taking up all this space. thanks for help

damn i cant believe i forgot the obvious.
galaxy tab A with S-Pen with android 8.1.0
i know it's old but it still works great for what i need it for.

Ah no worries, if you eject the SD card and reboot I'm curious what shows on the storage. These older tablets don't have adaptive storage so usually any apps take up the internal storage though you've mentioned you don't see a high amount

took out the card and rebooted it and i recovered .2 of storage. everything thing is the same except now i have 4GB of apps instead of 4.2GB of apps.

Yes, this is generally normal on older tablets with low memory. Since the missing space is usually taken up by the system itself and hidden data or application cache.

The best option is to try clearing the application cache, uninstalling updates for built-in applications and checking the memory. Also, move all the applications and data that you can to the SD card.
