16GB SD card in phone but phone not reading

So I bought one of the pre owned certified droid a855 from verizon. i noticed it already has a 16GB sd card in it. However when I go to the SD Card and Phone storage icon in the menu the SD card section reads

Total space
unavailable

Available space
unavailable

the mount sd card isnt even an option when i press on it it does nothing and its bot lit up like the other options. Just got the phone so im totally new to this stuff. all comments greatly appreciated.

On my laptop it says the a855 needs troubleshooting

I don't know about the 16GB card. But the 32GB card had issues like this if you try to format via the phone. Just take the card out and format it in a windows OS. Then put it back in the phone and it will read fine. Avoid formatting from the phone altogether.
