When you are connected to wifi you will see the 3G symbol go away replaced by symbol that has a circle at the bottom with 4 curved lines which represents the signal strength you are getting. (That's IF your connected)

I have wonderd the same thing. I see the 3G symbol go away but no WIFI symbol. Though it's easy to test the connection :)

This is from page 107 of the Eris manual I downloaded-

"When your phone is connected to a wireless network, the
Wi-Fi icon appears in the status bar and tells you the
approximate signal strength (number of bands that light up).
If Network notification in Wi-Fi settings is enabled, this icon
appears in the status bar whenever the phone detects an
available wireless network within range."

My icon shows up whenever I connect to a wifi access point.
