Apparently, Verizon had a new data plan in the works and now they have revealed it. They just announced a new Global Data Plan that will start at 100MB per month, for $25 per month. This new international data plan will become available on April 23rd. The plan does not include complete global roaming, and has some limitations, but for the majority of travelers this could be worth trying. The service will be available in over 120 areas and will span all of Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. If you stray outside of the plan's included areas but are still inside VZW's global coverage areas, you will incur pay-per-use rates of $0.02 for each KB downloaded. Also, once you have used up your initial allotment, an automated text message will share that an additional 100MB has been added automatically and tack on another $25 to your bill. Here's the full press release below:

No one should ever go through their carrier for international. You'll just be covered in charges.

Just buy a cheap quad band phone then prepay your way. Cheaper in the long run, and gives you more freedom.

Customer: "What do you mean my bill is $2,303.28?!!!"
Verizon CSR: "Sir, you used 211 MB of data. Only the first 100MB is $25.00/month."
Verizon CSR: "Will that be credit or debit, sir? There is a 9% surcharge for credit/debit payments." Sir?
Customer: *sound of gun shot and body hitting the floor*

After hearing your body hit the floor, they'd send out a rep to get your device so they can sell it as refurb.

If you use your domestic phone while in another country and you're there for more than 2 days... you're dumb.
Do not pass go. Do not collect a brain cell.

If you know you are going to travel keep a GSM phone handy and get a prepaid SIM upon arrival. It's especially easy if you use Google Voice. Connect it to your Skype number and people State-side won't even notice. When you call back State-side with Skype it's pennies per minute. If you need to call someplace within the country you're visiting just use the standard line to call out.

You'll also probably have 5GB of data with your SIM which means you can tether devices and stay connected.

    Too effin' easy.
