if i have a yahoo account with pop3 access (premium), I just use the non-gmail app and configure it to poll every 5 minutes? and that will work? without me having to do the imap settings?

This should be reliable and give notifications, correct?

your line of thinking is correct.
however, i am using that same setup with roadrunner email, and it does not update at all. I have it set to 5 minutes, but will only do the update manually.... Not sure whats wrong, but what you stated is the way its supposed to happen
