Network Mode is set to GSM rather than CDMA? Are you using the Vodafone SIM? If so, did you get Global Services to activate the SIM? And more to the point, did they! There have been recent reports of Verizon failing to activate the SIM. You can call them toll free (from another phone obviously) calling 0800 279 5088 followed by the callling card number and PIN you received with your phone. (Or call collect at +1 908 559 4899)
If the phone is unlocked, try a local SIM. I have had no problems using local SIMs in the UK (TalkMobile, Orange but I would expect most to work).
