What is the best balance in polling frequency between "staying in the loop" and battery life?

If it's polling, it's sucking juice. Do you really get so many emails that you need to know every 5 minutes if a new one arrived?

Or are you going to be messing with your phone constantly and can just run a manual refresh on you mailbox from time to time? The upside to that is you can show off your killer phone and/or new custom rom more frequently. And you can use it as an excuse to bail on a boring conversation.
