So adding Contacts into the Phone via "People" does not automatic sync to Gmail. Gmail is set to sync contacts with the phone via Accounts & Sync. Adding contacts to Gmail appears on the phone of course, but it doesn't work the other way around.

    The Droid did this perfectly.
    The Incredible does not.

Am I missing something? If HTC decided to leave a syncing feature out, this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen and I'm going right back to the Droid...

I was missing something. When adding a Contact you have to select the field "Contact Type" and select your Google account. Then it prompts you with notifications about contact fields. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. The Droid works better with Google

The Sense UI is less Google friendly then the Droid.

I've found that there is no way to set a Default Contact Type when adding a contact to your Phone. There is also no way to natively sync Phone contacts to Gmail contacts.

So there's no way to automatically sync phone contacts? A client of mine just added a handful of contacts thinking they were syncing to Gmail, which they weren't. There's no obvious way to sync any of these on mine. HTC did a good job screwing up how well Android worked with Google.

Definitely does not on the Incredible. Droid would add contact without having to select any additional fields at all.

On the Incredible, when you add a contact, there's an extra field at the top that says "Contact Type" and it defaults to "Phone" if you forget to change this, the contact will be added to your Phone locally, and not to Google. These contacts also won't sync with your Google account.

You have to manually remember to select that field every single time (one tap), then select your account (2nd tap). If you you select Google, it will prompt you to let you know that some fields may change when adding contacts to Google (3rd tap). So they successfully made it require 3 extra taps to add a Contact to Gmail.

Also, if you forget to select the Contact Type to Google, you can never change this, you'll have to Delete and Add the Contact again to Google.

    It's ridiculous.

I don't know jb222...That doesn't sound quite right to me. It's a Google phone, it should sync with Google no problem. Gmail, Google, phone....all one happy package.

OK, lets say that's correct. What's the OP doing wrong? I don't have an Incredible so I'm not certain what they are missing. Something in the gmail setup?

On Droid, I have multiple Google accounts, thus it prompts me automatically to pick an Account to sync with, the only ones that show up are Google. It has nothing to do with the Phone itself. If you have ONLY ONE Google Account, like most people do. It won't even prompt you, it will go directly into the Add Contact screen.

On Incredible, it's ready to add. Notice the "Contact type" field is default to "Phone"

This means that the contact will be added to the Phone, and not Google.

On Droid, after selecting your account from the automatic prompt, you can just add a contact and Save. Note: if you have only one Google account, it would already be in this screen automatically, ready to sync with Gmail.

On Incredible, you must still select the field.

Sorry about the quality of the pics.

Anyways, the problem I'm having is that I havent found a way to default the Contact Type to an account. It will default to the "Phone" contacts.

This is a problem for me, as well as many non-technical users. A client of mine has been adding contacts for the last few days, and none of them are appearing in Gmail. This is because he had no idea of the "Contact Type" field. When I told him about having to select the Contact Type, he's pissed as much as I am. It's just not logical to your workflow. They've added extra steps to the process that are easily missed when you're quickly trying to add Contacts.

    Less steps = Better

For those of you that are still confused, this is why:

The Incredible is capable of having "Phone" contacts that aren't necessarily tied to any account. You can see this in the following pic because you can select which contacts are displayed. Notice Google is separate from "Phone" contacts. I haven't found a way to sync Phone contacts to Google yet. I shouldn't have to find a work around. It should be much easier to keep these in sync.
