Messages app not showing any conversations

Sometime between noon and 5 today all the conversations in Messages on my Pixel disappeared. I have many messages in many conversations but when I open Messages I have an introductory screen as if I never ran it before. I check recently updated apps in My Apps on the Play store and Messages is not listed. As far as I can tell, nothing changed except the messages disappeared. When I open Messages for the Web on my computer I saw conversations briefly then the page cleared and looks like the app. SMS backup and restore sees messages to backup so I believe that the data is on my phone but the app is being stupid. Any thoughts?

Annnnnnnnnnnnd, now they are back. I went into Messages, settings, changed my default messaging app to something else, and on return to the main screen everything was there. Back into settings, pick Messages again, and they persist. SMH.
