Media Player is CHOPPY! Lastfm's fault?

This is very strange: just about every time I put a new song on, the song gets choppy. It's not exactly like a scratched CD sound, but something like that -- it's like the song keeps progressing, but I get silence for two or three seconds. This will happen two to four times on any given song, and usually toward the beginning of the song -- and generally speaking, the longer I've had the media player running, the fewer times it will happen. Since it tends to happen at the beginning of the song, I'm wondering if it might be because my lastfm app is "scrobbling"? Beyond lastfm (which runs every time I run the media player), I'm usually not running anything else on the device.

Anyone else had this problem?
