Is there any way to remove a preloaded skype version? (no root)

My android tablet has skype installed as a preloaded app, but the problem is that it performs *very* poorly and is almost inaudible (too quiet at max volume settings). I have tested an older version of skype and it works much better, but somehow I have to remove (not just disable) the preloaded version before I can correctly install the alternate version.

In my case I've actually been able to temporarily install the alternate skype version via a series of kludges, so I can test it and know it works well, but unless I can fully uninstall the preloaded version then it keeps reverting to that original version each time it's rebooted. :(

I haven't been able to get the tablet rooted. Does anyone have any suggestions on this one?

What is the make/model of the tablet in question?

There is a root/unlocker available called Nexus Root Toolkit, and works for he Nexus 7, but since I have the WiFi version, the root function is a little trickier to accommodate for this, but the unlocker app works well and does unlock the bootloader.
