how can i get gmail to update automatically?

I love my Droid but one annoyance is I keep having to manually refresh my gmail msg...in other word, it won't notify me of new incoming mail like it does with my hotmail account. I'm sure its just a setting but I can't find it. Help.

For me, this worked: Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync > Auto-sync was wasn't checked. Make sure it's checked. I did this and reset my LG Thrill and so far so good.
