i use helix launcher, its still un rooted but you get extra home screens if needed, but my base homescreen has across the bottom, which are locked on every screen because of helix: contacts, email, handcent, gtalk. in the main part of home screen i have google search, gmail, maps, swift, dockrunner, facebook, marketplace and a weatherbug widget, also a 2x2 calwidget that sync to google calendar.
