You don't try and become America's favorite carrier by ignoring the craze. Right now Pokemon Go is hot. So hot you have celebrities talking about Squirtle and Charizard during Interviews.

So what do you do if you are T-Mobile, jump on the latest craze and announce that you are giving free unlimited data for Pokemon Go for a year.

So who loves you, looks like your Uncle Legere do.

This breaks net neutrality.

No it doesn't. Slowing down access to Amazon for example so Pokemon Go data isn't slowed does. Paying for faster access to Pokemon Go data does. Not counting data towards your data cap and doesn't do anything in the way of speeding up or slowing down any other data doesn't.

It's called Zero-rating and it does. The FCC has yelled at Tmo before for this kind of stuff. Will they do anything, no but it is against net neutrality.
There are quite a few articles on this.

But those offers were given out to qualifying customers automatically. For the free Pokemon GO data offer on T-Mobile, customers will have to download the T-Mobile Tuesday app to claim the offer the coming Tuesday or on any Tuesdays till 9th August. This exemption of services from data usage charges is also being referred to as zero-rating.

Of course, this is against net neutrality and the carrier has been criticized several times. However, T-Mobile has clarified that this is a limited time gift for its customers and FCC rules do not prohibit zero rating anyway. And it’s optional for customers, so those who don’t want it won’t get it. T-Mobile is also offering some great freebies with the plan.

Well since TMO is in the states, it would only benefit US customers.
