2.3.4 rooted?

I have never rooted a phone and the current version is extremely slow..... My contract is up with Verizon and I can upgrade whenever....but I wanna see what i can do before either breaking it or getting it to work nicely and that I'll kinda know what I'm doing so when I get a nice fancy phone I can make it better than it actual is without breaking it.... Just trying to find out where I should start looking on how to do this kinda thing. Any help would be appreciated

from there you can remove bloat (unwanted extra apps) and overclock to make it a bit speedier, or just install a completely different custom Android OS
