The gradual unwinding of Android apps from the core of the OS that we first saw begin last month with Gmail’s separation continues, with Google today launching a standalone – and updated – YouTube app on the Android Market.
The bad news is it’s for “FroYo” powered Android 2.2 devices at the moment, but the good news is… it’s ever-so-slightly different.
Search results are marginally tidier, but the big change is that videos no longer auto-rotate themselves into landscape mode – there’s an all-new details page giving you info and related data beneath the clip as it begins to play in a tiny window at the top of the listing.
The bad news is you’re able to easily read the comments in a separate tab. And YouTube comments are the VERY PITS of HELL.
Still, nice refresh all the same. Keep an eye out for a Google announcement with all the details. It’ll be along soon, surely…
