wireless tether not working, barnacle not working either

My friend rooted his Incredible and is trying to use wireless tethering, and it's not working. He's tried wireless tether and barnacle and neither work. I don't have an incredible, but imagine that if it's as easy as on the moto droid 1 that it should be easier for him. Anyone has problems with tethering and have suggestions? Thanks

Is he using a ROM with wireless tether baked in?

No, he likes the phone as is, only rooted to use a tethering app.

There has been the occasional story lately about tethering apps just not working lately and/or redirecting to the hotspot apps... hopefully that's not the case here, but just sayin'...

Does it seem like having a rom with tethering built in works better, or does it matter?

Try using the Open Garden WiFi Tethering App, it seems to work better than Barnacle
