wifi tether speed

Anyone know why when using wifi tether the connection speeds seem to be about half to the tethering device? Is this a limitation of the hardware of the GNex or is there a software setting I can tweak to get full throughput to the tethering device?

check to make sure you're doing tests from the same server. my speeds are identical whether i do it from the phone or from laptop that's tethered to the phone. which software do you use to tether? i tested using wireless tether for rooted devices.
