Where did my keypad go?

Moto Droid newbie here....

When I dial a phone number (or use a contact dial), after a few seconds the keypad/dialpad/numbers disappear. This happens *regardless* of what I have the screen timeout set for. This is especially a PITA when doing phone-based banking, voice mail, etc., basically anything that I have to enter numbers and press #.

How can I keep the keypad/dialpad/numbers "on" at all times while in call?

hit the button that says dialpad right next to the end button (it keeps you from face dialing), speakerphone is right below it

you cant keep it on all the time
