I think the question is, what can't be done once rooted. Switching roms will become very addicting until you find your personal favorite. Mine is SS 5.4.

But as the previous post states, root, backup, install rom, customize it, then overclock it!

Mind u i have a dx now. My d1 is not a phone anymore just lying around. Can it be used for other things once rooted?

Rooting will probably keep you busy for a little while. Trying out different roms and kernels, plus learning all of this. But if for nothing else, I'll keep my d1 around for playing emulators. So much better having a physical keyboard, which I don't plan on getting with my next phone. Anyways, there will definitely be a lot od things you can find to do with it still.

a lot of things

actaully the only thing you cant do is make 3g phone calls or data.
you can still hit wifi places and use it for internet and while you are on wifi google sip and you can make calls too if needed.

when away from wifi. you still can play mp3's,movies, games

wrrite emails and send them when you get to wifi.
most mcdonalds and most resturants have free wifi so its plentiful.
other than someone calling you at anytime on it , its still a fully functional device.
thats why i dont mind spending some money on a great phone. because at least its not just garbage when you get a new one.

also google maps is going to offer an offline version soon. so youd have gps too.

but since you have a droid x of course you can do all these things with it. so? But if you do things that you dont want to take a change at runing your x like riding atv's, boating and such but want a music player or gps than you have the droid. which i have found to be pretty indestructable.

i here you can still get about 100 bucks with a couple accesories selling it too.
trade in values are a joke but if you have the droid and the droid x you may be able to trade them in for a newer tech phone later this year.
