Verizon Wireless to get into the Cloud Business

Yes you read that right, VZW is going to be getting into the cloud business. Verizon said on Tuesday that it will deliver cloud-based storage for smartphones and tablets. Customers will receive 500MB of storage FREE, and can get up to 125GB of storage for a price. Verizon is offering four storage plans to customers:

• 500MB: Free
• 25GB: $2.99 per month
• 75GB: $5.99 per month
• 125GB: $9.99 per month

Verizon PR manager David Samberg said in a blog post that "the secure storage app gives customers a place to back up and access their information" and that "additionally, as customers use multiple devices, sometimes running on different operating systems, Verizon Cloud will allow for the transferring of some content between Android and iOS devices, making it accessible across smartphones, tablets and computers."

Big Red's cloud storage will begin rolling out in the coming weeks on Android first, followed by support for iOS devices "soon." Samberg says support for other operating systems will come "later this year."

Question for our readers. Will you, or would you, take advantage of VZW cloud based services?

Depends on the quality of the app. I need to have all my pics uploaded instantly and I also need to ability to share files in the cloud via a public link. If it has those things, then I'm interested because the cost per gigabyte is less than Dropbox. You get 125 for the same price as 100 on DB.

500 megs free? What a waste. That's really not even enough to get people to trial. Big fail. Otherwise, the options and pricing look pretty decent.

I keep backups online after suffering thru a few painful hard drive crashes. But I just piece together a variety of free storage options. With a few laptops and a few external hard drives online storage just isn't a service worth paying for, IMO. Dropbox more than handles whatever I'm currently working on so I don't lose a few days of progress.

I have 0 problems with dropbox, but I only use it on computer. They used to start you out with 2 gigs free. And you get 250megs for every referral to the service (double that if you signed-up with a .edu email). They occasionally hand-out free storage to beta test new versions. I've got over 10gigs free now.

I also use Box, and have 50 gigs free on that.

Skydrive is 25 gigs free (but I think they limit file sizes).

And I have Google Music for backing-up MP3's.

I carry a 64gig USB with my OS/factory image on it. So I think I'm pretty well covered for disaster.

Just can not trust them. Even though it looks good I would be scared to use it. Some crap like if you move you lose your data. No clue, very hard to trust anything Verizon does anymore; if I need the space(and I do not due to dropbox/box/google drive) I would pay the extra $5 for a company I feel far more comfortable with.

I don't use VZW's apps. For backups I use Photobucket, Box, Dropbox, Drive, Minus & an external drive on my pc.

I used Dropbox for years, in my opinion it was better because I could edit a file on any other device and it would immediately synch up. My laptop died a couple of weeks ago and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 on my new system Dropbox would not install correctly. I've tried installing on Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 with no luck the install doesn't complete. Folks have also had issues running Dropbox on 12.10 and 13.04.

So, I tried One. So far the only issue I have with One is that I can't edit a file on a remote device and save the updated file to the cloud. I can only update files from the system where the files originated. Kind of odd, hopefully the developers are working on this.
