USB to PC connection not working

what does the icon say when you pull down?

theres not a mount option in the toolbar - you have to select usb connected to get the option to mount or not

I don't get anything on the Droid. I only see the pitchfork on the PC.

Nothing yet and I spent almost an hour on the phone with verizon technical support.
Short of a complete wipe support recommended I contact Motorola for help. I plan to try to contact them soon.

I would try taking out the sd card and stick it in a card reader to see if you have some kind of sd card glitch...

I had a similar problem... removing the card and replacing it solved it for me... also found out the hard way that some usb cables suck
