Updated without my permission

I just had 6 applications update without my permission or any attempt to contact me regarding an update (started at 4:46pm Pacific time today 10-4). Did anyone else just get this and is this standard practice?
Apps:
Gmail, Books, VideoSurf, Citrix Receiver, Adobe Flash Player 11.0 and V CAST Tones

I normally see an "Updates available" that I can choose to update if I wish, I'm just curious that if this is the case, will they start automatically push out all updates to the phone whether we want them or not?

Some are on autoupdate. Go to market, open the app and see if allow automatic updates is checked

Most google apps and main apps update automatically. Like gmail, flash, and verizon stuff. Any real market app from a dev will ask to update.

Same thing happened on my Droid 3. Seems like the culprit was only concerned with bloatware apps.
