On a couple of occasions right after or during charging my screen became totally unresponsive. I tried holding down the power button but that only opens the menu popup and of course I cannot pick restart because screen doesn't respond. I finally had to pull the battery.

Is there a way to shut off or restart or get to the hboot screen when screen is totally unresponsive?

I was one of the few that pre-ordered this baby.
So I've had it since 11/10.
Yesterday the screen froze.
There was no response when I touched it.
So, I tried to do the reboot button thing.
I hit the power and volume button (tried up and down volume buttons).
Held them down together.

I had to do this about four times.
Eventually it worked and the phone came back to life.
Screen was responsive.

Does anyone find this to be unusual?
Do I have a defective phone or not?

Had this happen a few times. Though it was annoying, it wasn't a deal breaker. To answer your question, no, it's not a defect. A simple OTA update should fix this.
