Here's an interesting new smartphone called the Yotaphone 2. This one of a kind Android smartphone is equipped with a second, e-ink display on the backside of the handset. The display on the front of the device works just like any other Android display would, but on the rear, you're presented with a 4.7-inch touch sensitive always on e-ink screen that can be used to interact with calls, texts, emails, and your favorite social media sites.
The e-ink panel isn't only great to look at, but the company said that it also contributes to better battery life. Yota Devices claims that the 2,500mAh battery can power the phone for more than 50 hours when using just the e-ink display. The phone also features a Smart Power Mode, which shuts off the 5-inch, 1080p, full color AMOLED display, diverting battery power to the much more efficient e-ink display.
Not all Android apps work with the second screen, but the company did release the phone's SDK to third-party developers, which will hopefully open up the floodgates to some cool and unique apps for the smartphone.
Specs include:
Android 4.4
2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 CPU
2GB of RAM
8-megapixel rear shooter
2-megapixel shooter up front
2.500mAh battery
No official word on availability, price, and launch information, but CNET reports that the device will be initially be sold in Russia, Europe, and the Middle East, with China and the United States expected to get the phone by the end of the year. We'll be keeping an eye out for this one.
