Text not receiving sometimes

Hey, so this isn't specifically a droid issue, but it has happened on my droid x now. Sometimes when I am testing someone I won't receive one of their text for a couple hours or until someone else sends me a text, then they will both come through. I had this problem also on my old phone (envy touch) and it was tell me what time the message was sent and when I received it. Any reason why this happens?
