Text messaging only shows phone numbers

For most of my text messages, it only shows the phone number, even though I have a contact linked to that number. I've tried deleting and re-typing in contacts, and adding to existing contact, but nothing has worked.
It's really annoying because I get text messages from people but I don't know who it is! and I have to keep asking them.
Anyone else have this problem? and/or found a way to fix it?

Make sure you have the complete phone number, including area code, in your contacts.

Yeah, I've checked that. The numbers are exactly the same.
