Sleep mode and unlock?

My question is, that when i want to return to using my phone i have to wake it up by hitting the power button and then unlock it to use it. How can i turn the wake up off? can i just touch the screen to wake up and unlock it that way?

I dont think so...I wish there was...like a double tap or something. Lets see what others say

I think that the screen is put into sleep mode for the reason you stated. If the screen is tapped it could be accidentally turned on in your case or pocket. I also feel that the unlock feature on the top of the phone is inconvenient but I think I'll get used to it.
