If you mean ROMs and Kernels like this:

BB v0.5 (FRG22d 2.2 ROM)
ChevyNo1's Low Voltage 7-slot 0.8Ghz Kernel

---------------

That all has to do with rooted phones and is a whole education itself. Check the other forums on this site for clarification. Everyone here is very friendly and always looking to covert a stock user to root. :)

i rooted my phone yesterday so i guess i really need to learn a lot.

Hah yea it can be a whole education in custom ROMs or kernels.

If you just barely rooted I would recommend you sit there with root and figure out what exactly you can do with root. Go on the market and do a search for "root" to see what apps you can use now that require root! I rooted just so I can wirelessly tether my phone to my laptop. However I was able to figure out I can do even more! I sat with stock Android (I rooted when I got the first Android 2.2 (Froyo) update FRG01B until I received the update to FRG22D. I downloaded Shootme to take screenshots of my phone (that you see tons of here, another popular one is Drocap), I downloaded Wireless Tether to wirelessly tether. I was able to figure out that ES File Manager has root options that allowed me to perform Root actions on my phone, like copy custom boot animations I uploaded to my SD Card on my phone into the data directory on my phone (there is a whole set of threads on this forum for that!). I set up Titanium Backup for root users so that I can backup all my apps and all my data, so that if I DO apply a custom ROM, I can go back to exactly the version of the app I want. Case in point I downloaded the latest version of Wireless Tether from the Google developer page (2.0.5 pre11 beta), and it did nothing but force close on me every time I tried to start it. I uninstalled it and restored the version I backed up with titanium (vers 2.0.2) and its been running great since.

However once I got the FRG22D update to my phone from verizon, the version of root I had was completely unusable (I was using UniversalAndroot.apk to root my phone), so once I downloaded adb, the Android Software Development Kit, and was able to root my Droid that way, I decided enough was enough and I went full on with UltimateDroid extreme Froyo 8.0 (at the time). Now I've got UltimateDroid ver 1.0.0 and haven't looked back (I have tried other ROMS but this one just appeals to me).

Otherwise
a ROM is a custom OS recoded to have different features than a stock OS.
e.g. My Motorola Droid had a standard Froyo (Android vers. 2.2) update FRG22D from Verizon.
I currently am running the UltimateDroid v 1.0.0 custom ROM, which is based on the latest Android 2.2.1 build (FRG83), and it adds some custom features that the standard Froyo that Verizon passed on to me just didn't have.

The custom kernel is the most basic part of the OS. I would defer to someone else to explain it better, but the kernel is what tells the processor what to do, the most basic code the ROM runs over. For example, I am running a custom kernel from ChevyNo1 that allows me to overclock my Motorola Droid 1 up to 1.25 Ghz, and it also sets the Voltage to an "ultra-low" setting (I don't know what the exactly settings are though). However it does more than that, as a different kernel can sometimes cause wifi not to work correctly.

Themes (as in that post) are exactly what they are in Windows: Settings that cause your ROM to look differently than normal, such as different icons, different indicators in the notification bar (like your GPS notification looking slightly different than normal), or for it to be different colors.

I list in my sig "ADW Launcher", which is a home replacement app that also makes my phone look and feel different. It tweaks the app drawer, how many screens I have on my phone, and more. You can download this from the market, but you have to weed through all the different themes on the market after searching for ADW.

I have links in my signature (for example), of where you can get what I have listed as being on my phone.
