I am pretty sure that the helix launcher resizes them for you automatically. Your standard home screen icon is 72 x 72 I think.

yes they are

When helix resizes icons that were changed with bettercut, the result is a distorted, kinda jagged version of the icon once you put it into the Helix shortcut area. This is what he means. Certain sizes (40x40 i think?) tend to look less distorted when put next to the app tab.
