Here is a pic of my homescreen. I'm still kinda new to all this, so please bare with me. I'm coming to the Droid from a iPhone 3Gs and so far..I'm loving it!
You have to install the android software developers kit and the usb drivers. Install the latest java developers kit then run a tool found int he android developers kit called ddms.bat. That gives you screen shot capability.

My middle screen is my phone, gmail, facebook, contacts, messages, youtube, browser and marketplace. Then my left screen is my games and my right screen is apps and tools...I would highly recomend the beautiful widgets from the marketplace. It is the top paid app. Its a clock, over 100 different styles, and the weather for your area. the icons for weather are cool because they move and stuff check out a vid on youtube. and the USA today app is pretty good...hope this helps

I use HelixLauncher, so I have seven screens, but for my set up I have various widgets on the main screen(top to bottom):
Flip Clock/Flip Date
Transdroid
Google Weather
Settings Widget
To the right I keep most of my productivity apps and the last page to the right is my "temp" page where I keep things that I think I might want but am still testing to see if it's worth actually keeping. To the left I have more widgets. On the page immediately to the left of my home page are media controllers, the playlist controller for the phone, pandora, and VLC Remote, and to take up space is the Google News widget. To the left of that are a couple more widgets(shut up, I like them.) A status bar showing battery %, SD card and internal memory usage takes up two spaces at the top, next to that I have a picture frame that I tend to change whenever I find something neat. Right now it is a fractal image I took and turned into a background. I won't put it on here, because it's a huge file. Under those I have a facebook widget, and in the remaining two spaces are ES Task Manager and ES File Manager. To the left of that is uh... games.
I would have just put up a screenshot, but I am just so damned lazy.
