Screen bug during a call? - goes black and only flashes

I've had an issue with my Samsung Galaxy S3 that's starting to drive me crazy:
During a call the screen is primarily blacked out. When I touch the screen during a call, it flashes on for a split moment and then goes black again. I can't seem to get the screen to stay functional long enough to touch an extension number, for instance. I can NEVER get to any other screen during a call.

There is a sensor on the front that is supposed to turn the screen off when it is up to your ear or near your face. Is something stuck in there?

Has this always happened? Or is it a new problem?

This is relatively new behavior. Maybe something with the sensor, but when it's away from my face it doesn't seem to recover. I also wanted to see if this is a common issue with the Galaxy or if anyone had a "fix" for this in their experience. Your help is appreciated!
