Safe to download?

With the flash software install sitting in my taskbar, as a newly rooted user, I am a little nervous. Once rooted and loaded with a ROM, how do I know which system updates are safe to use and which aren't?

I assume that this flash update will be safe, but is there a more generic set of rules that I can follow to not mess up my rooted phone? I searched but all the terms are so generic and repeated that it is hard to get good hits...

Actually, I have heard the flash update is causing problems for Root Users

I used a method stickied on these forums about how to do it. I am at work so my computer is slow enough to prevent me from finding the link itself. As it is, just refreshing this forum page takes about 5 minutes.

Is there an easy way to get the system to stop trying to get me to install the update?
