Running Multiple Apps

My phone has been unable to run multiple apps, how do I do this? I can't seem to have more than one app open at a time, or am I just missing something, dumb, or just plain uneducated?! I thought you could keep up to 5 open at the same time? Please be kind LOL!

The apps run in the background.. if you long-press on the home button it will bring up a menu which shows the current 6 apps running.
