Rooted WIFI tether help

Hi everyone I was hoping someone would explain to me why I can't get my wifi tether to work. I have a rooted Droid 2 and I have tried the Open Garden app. Downloaded Barnacle, haven't tried it yet though. Is there something simple I am missing? One other thing, after I attempt to tether I lose my 3g connection. Have to turn my phone off and back on to get it back. Any help would be appreciated.

The wife's R2D2 has the same issue, can't get anything to work for wifi tethering. Its running Android 2.3.3 and 4.53602.A957. I could sure use some help too!
