Root for morons

Ill preface by saying when it comes to these phones/computers im the biggest idiot around. I am however smart enough to notice our bugs. How difficult/involved is rooting? What the top advantages and disadvantages of rooting?

And this info is most likely sticky'd in at least 50 places.
Not trying to be an a$$ i just wish the search function was used the slightest bit so there arent thousands of the same thread with the same questions. Maybe they should enlarge the seaech field and button to an absurd size.
