Refurbished?

Is there a way to tell if a tablet is refurbished or new?

I had to return my Samsung 10.1 tablet, which is still under warranty, because the screen went all blotchy. Verizon is suppose to send me a new one but is there a way I can tell if they sent me a refurbished one instead?

Packaging. It would be illegal to put a refurb in a new unit's packaging and send it out, without indicating that it is a refurb.
Serial number. Some companies have a special serial number pattern for refurb units. (e.g. an R at the end, etc.). If you call tech support, they may be able to tell you.
