Rate the Motorola Droid

I am really liking the Droid. It is my first smartphone and I have been using it so much, I do not know how I lived without one.

I am not going to lie, I have been an iPhone fanboy since before it even came out, but was never able to get one because I was not willing to travel to AT&T. I did however, have an iPod Touch and was in love with it. I was a little hesitant to get the droid because I thought I wouldn't like it because I was use to the iPhone OS. I am glad I got it. The customization of the Droid is outstanding, and the OS is great.

I have had smartphones since the Treo 600 then Treo 700W (became a Treo 700WX due to a warranty claim), then Samsung Omnia (i910) to the Droid. This device is the most advanced of all previous smartphones and addresses many of the issues experienced with the earlier models listed above. Full integration to Microsoft's Outlook's - Notes is the last outstanding issue I am dealing with but once resolved I will have a true 5 for 5 rating.

Wish I could vote 4.5 instead of 5. Because it's not 100% perfect, but it's really a very good phone.

It would be a solid 5 if it had Bluetooth-activated voice-dialing. That's really my only complaint that hasn't been addressed.

I've rated it a 4 because I already see a lot of things that are going to bother me...

At first glance, why is it then when typing on the pull out keyboard there is no auto-fix to help you type better? The keyboard is already a bit hard to type on compared to a touch screen or other keyboards with buttons which protrude out - but to not even have some auto correct on it? Very poor choice.

Next, why can't you bring your phone out of sleep by pushing other buttons besides the one at the top which is in an awkward location for someone who is used to the convenience of an i Phone? As far as I'm concerned the volume or camera button should do the same.

I like ALOT about this phone but there are certainly some fixes that need to happen to bring it up to it's full potential. Thankfully, it's new and has time to be improved.

.

Find ScreenModeWidget in Marketplace. Will do exactly what you're asking.

I've been using it for a week with no issue.

There is auto-fix. Maybe it's application dependent, I never gave it much thought. But it definitely does auto-fix. No auto-suggestion, though, which is also useful, even in the context of keyboarding.

I claim it's less "familiar" than the touch screen or some of the other keyboards. But using it changes that. After what, a month-and-a-half, I already like it better than the on-screen keyboard (much easier to hit the wrong key on-screen) and better than my old Treo keyboard, which was just too small. Sure, they could so better, but that would have to add thickness, and this was clearly targeted as an iPod-challenger. Nothing thick would be seen in that same light.

I want as few buttons as possible turning on the phone... fewer to accidentally press. When it's sleeping, I want it to stay asleep until I intentionally wake it. I just need one way to wake it, any others mean more accidental wakings.

As far as I'm concerned the volume or camera button should do the same.
I disagree.. the proper behavior of the volume buttons are changing volume... which makes little sense unless you have an active application accepting those buttons. The proper behavior of the camera button is to open the default camera app, if one isn't already open, then shoot photos. Make this also wake up, and you'll wind up with regular shots of the inside of the pocket.

In this case, real cameras agree with me. I have about 40 cameras, and I don't have a single one with any form of electricity in it that doesn't have separate "on" and "shoot" buttons. Same deal here.

But you definitely win the "ironic request" competition. After all, the iPod is well known to only need ONE button, eh? I'm really happy there are many more on the DROID, but equally so that only one wakes it up. Maybe if I had been an iPod user... naah... I have the experience of many dozens of CE devices, some of which are actually my designs. The DROID answers this question correctly (can't vouch for all Android devices), IMHBEO.

so far i'm not totally happy. it's a cool phone overall and it's fast but it's very difficult to type on the keyboard, and the touchscreen .. forget it and you can't use a stylus or finger nails.

Keyboard takes practice. I was kind of bummed out about it when I first got the DROID, but now I like it better than the touchscreen keyboard or my old Treo. No, it'll never be as nice as the Bella keyboard on my desktop, but then again, I actually paid more for that than the whole DROID (we had an extra $100 off, though the NE2 plan).

Touchscreen is capacitive, like that of the iPhone, the Palm Pre, and many other "touch" devices. A capacitor is formed when you have two conductors separated by an insulator.. in the case of the touchscreen, there's a conductive layer, and the glass itself is the insulator. Your finger, making electrical contact with the screen, changes the capacitance, and that's how the "touch" is recorded. It won't work with most stylus (like for older Palms), because they're made of plastic... they are insulators themselves, so they won't change the capacitance. Maybe an all-metal stylus, but the point is to not need the stylus. It's not perfect.. my left fingertips are heavily callused from playing guitar, and that's enough of an insulator to make using my left hand kind of hit or miss on the DROID.

The old-style touchscreens, like the Palm Pilots and Treos, were resistive in nature. You actually had to push into the screen a bit, changing the resistance value to record the touch. This worked ok, but it did require a stylus, and it also caused regular wear to the touchscreen.

I still can't figure out my calendar or how to IM people.
I didn't use a Calendar other than the Palm calendar, so I didn't have any "integration" issues. The default calendar app syncs to Google Calendar, which is nicer than it was with Palm, since I can access this from any old PC, and there's no explicit sync needed (stuff from Google just syncs over the network, in the background).

There's going to be stuff to learn, with any new, non-trivial CE device. You can get cellular IM from contacts, and most other means of communications. Just go to "Contacts", and extend-press on a contact. You'll get a list of icons, including email, SMS, Facebook, etc.

I also use IM from Yahoo, and for that, I downloaded the Meebo free app. Works great. This integrates with the Contact Manager, so if I have a other folks on Yahoo (or other chat protocols supported in Meebo, like AIM), I can get this directly from Contacts, too.

4 for now

The Motorola Droid is a great phone. The only thing missing, which is software related, is having apps saved to the SD card. Because of this I rated the phone a 4. Once they fix this, which is hopefully soon, I will up the award to a 5 and include a :D

Luv Droid

Switched from iPhone and AT&T Loving Droid/Android OS Also loving the Verizon Network Droid is much faster at loading Apps and Web Voice also sounds better when I am talking to somebody. Do not know if it is the Phone or Verizon But it is much better

have you tried this yet ? Worked for me
To improve voice Quality on Droid
Dial
##PROGRAM (then hit send)
"Enter SPC password" pops up ==> type "000000" then hit verify
Select "04 Vocode"
Select EVRC-B ==> the factory default is EVRC.

One fault...my hands get cold pretty easy, which makes me open the keyboard since the touch screen won't work with cold fingers...lol....maybe they will come out with a heated stylus for it....:icon_ devil:

I just did this... Im not really sure if it worked or what. My question is, why would vzw not want it on the best setting out of the box?

Oh, BTW how did you find out about this? Is is some sort of hack or factory control that you know of because you are special? Or did I just program my droid to self destruct??? LOL.

Anyways thanks for that I felt pretty cool doing it. :D

^-^
