ever since the new update, my droid would shut off out of the blue without me knowing... I'd have to open the battery compartment and remove the battery, reinstall and then it works again... it happened 3 times in the past week...?!

This has happened to me and others here on the forum. I had one day where it happened 3 times and then never happened for another week or two then happened once. Hasn't happened in a long time for me now. Not sure the cause. Just do the battery pull and if it happens more frequently then worry about it or take it in to exchange it. I haven't had to do that with mine though...yet.;)

Same thing happened to me twice after the 2.1 update.

The first time it happened I was just holding it, the second time it happened was when the browser crashed.

Hopefully it'll be resolved soon.

It's awful hard to resolve something that the majority of us arn't experiencing. My phone has never done a random reboot (knock on wood). however if it did I wouldn't get too worried about it just because, well, stuff happens.

what do you mean shut down? if the phone powers itself off, you should be able to power it back on. my first droid actually would go to sleep and not wake up. the power would still be one (lights on the keyboard would illuminate) but the phone would not wake up, resulting in a battery pull.

try a factory reset and see if that helps. if you still experience the issue, clear out your SD card, do another factory reset and try again. these are the steps that vzw will (should) take anyway, before replacing your phone.

I had a similar problem narrowed it down to a music player app I had. Forgot what it's called but the icon looks like pacman. Uninstalled it and haven't had a problem since
