Question about framework-res.apk

Wondering if it is possible to add a new file to the framework-res.apk. For example if i wanted to make a new emoticon "0" and had a .png file for it could i add a new spot for it?

Its been my experience that adding extra .png files to the framework-res.apk, mostly the drawable-hdpi, thats not recognized by the rom will not show up. In other words, your rom has to "know" they are there and what to do with them.
