Power button not working correctly?

The power button on my phone won't lock it. If I press it, it will automatically go to giving me the options to turn it off, silent mode, etc.. However, if the phone is sleeping, pressing the power button will sometimes activate it.
What's the deal here? Why isn't the power/lock button doing its job?

Have you set up a pattern lock on your Droid?
