Possible to root my 2.1 ESE81 with no PC? (or paid apps)

I just got my replacement Droid from insurance and it feels so naked because it's not rooted. I don't have a PC at the moment and was wondering if I could root without one. I know there is an app that does it but I am waiting on my new debit card to show up and can't buy apps at the moment. I have the SD card from my old phone, can I just use a nandroid backup from my old phone and restore it to this one or do I have to be rooted first?

you have to be rooted, but once rooted with a recovery image you can use your nandroid backup.

It must be possible to root without a PC or the app wouldn't be able to do it. I wonder how it can be done?
