Phone goes directly to voice mail

My Verizon Droid version 2.2.2 phone does not ring but goes directly to voice mail. How do I correct this?

Go to your settings/sound and see if you have silent mode checked.

Silent is unchecked, vibrate is never, volume sliders 3/4 and "use incoming call volume" is checked.

See if you are connected.
When my old phone would not get a good signal, calls went straight to Vmail.

Connected?? I'm able to access the internet via the browser. Is that what you mean?
