Just to wrap this thread up, the problem went away. It was caused by my fingers being too cold.

FYI, Droid 2 Global does fine in -20 degrees (windchill factored in). Took it climbing with me in White Mountains on Christmas Eve, summit attempt of Mt. Avalon+1 un-named mountain. Worked well enough to take several pictures and held signal for the whole trip. Note that we were below the treeline for much of it though. Only observed issues were touchscreen blurring and harsh battery drop about 4 hours into the trip. This is why you keep it in a pocket inside your water/windproof shell, under a down piece. I accidentally left it in an outside pocket.

Best part though: someone's iPhone shut down about halfway through it.

Mine plays up in the cold (runs weeeeell slow).

The screen goes bonkers as well, but it's due to humidity and condensation.

I have almost zero issues with mine right now (just returned from a walk, -22°C outside with 97% relative humidity).

The only (unavoidable) one is battery life. Battery drains awfully fast when it's cold.
