overclocking? explanation?

hi there, i right now am running my droid 1 rooted with PE 5.0.2. my question is about over clocking. i been reading people talking about battery life and kernals and over clocking and such. i am lost on that. is there a explanation on teh forums somewhere of overclocking and kernals that i missed when i searched? or can someone give me the cliffnotes explanation.
