on/off choice for service search?

Hi fellow Droid owners! Mine will be in sometime this coming week, just ordered it today.
Is it possible to turn off the "searching for service/reception" while playing games or taking pictures or whatever other task I'm doing that doesn't require a phone? Perhaps an App or a menu or?
My area has bad reception and my LG dies quickly while playing freecell. I only need the phone part of the phone 2 or 3 times a day.

I'm not 100% sure on that uma......if there is I haven't heard of how to do it.

If you push and hold the power button, you can select "airplane mode." That should suit your needs.
