YOU DONT NEED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE BESIDES THE DIRECTIONS BELOW! FOLLOW THEM TO A T AND YOULL BE FINE! IF LESS THEN 40% BATTERY REMAINING PLUG PHONE TO CHARGER

Ok first off download astro file manager from the market then in the preferences check the enable browser download. Now go to the link below. Thats the only file you need. As soon as its downloaded go back to astro and rename the file as update NOTHING ELSE! then turn your phone off and turn back on holding both ther power and x button. When the little exclamation point comes up release the buttons then push up on the volume control and push the camera button at the same time. It will give you options use the d-pad to navigate to apply update.zip and hit x. It will install then ask you if you want to reboot then hit x and your done! Froyo galore!

thank you SO much for your advice!
quick question: is the link you provided for the larger 76m version (and not the smaller 40-something)? and is it the most up-to-date version? I know I will still (hopefully) eventually get the FRG22 from verizon, but I want to make sure I don't install the original version of FRG01b that needed a patch or something.
I'm not doubting you at all, I put my droid's life in your hands, I just feel better if I ask first haha.

I don''t know what you could be looking at. Use these instructions instead.

Manual Android 2.2 Update for Motorola DROID | Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

There is no difference to the best of my knowledge between the two updates. Other then size they are still the same.

thanks for the advice! I saw those instructions but I didn't know if I should use those files since they are from august 3rd. I thought there was some issue with the original file everyone was manually installing?

If you want the OTA patch update, use this file: https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip

If you want the full system update (fully replaces your /system instead of patching), use this file: 9046f5a3ec09.signed-voles-ota-45394.zip

If you want the full system update with root, use this file: http://bit.ly/frg01b

edit: be careful with links 2 and 3, they're identical file names, so rename them if/when you download

I finally got the OTA update about noon today. The phone runs very quirky and slow now. When I got my first text after the update, my usual notification was gone, and instead the phone started playing a song from my music folder. It did not stop playing the song until I viewed the text. I had to go into settings and redefine my notification sound.

It takes 2-4 seconds or sometimes more for any command to be followed now. My phone has never been lightning fast, but it seems about 30% of what it has been so far. Seems like an old PC trying to run a CPU intensive program and maxing itself out.

I can't stream any music, which is a big deal. I also could not play any playlist music, the app just sits there with a blank screen and does nothing. Luckily I can still play songs and albums.

I've been using K-9 email and killing the stock email app so I dont get duplicate emails...and the stock email app never restarts itself until the phone is rebooted. Now, the stock email app keeps restarting itself after I kill it, so I had to manually disable it's email checks to prevent duplicates.

In the multimedia dock, the home screen looks a little crappier, but I do like the new clock that it switches to after a few minutes, which is more like a regular LED bedside clock and should be more suitable for night use. However, those damn lights on the side for the four buttons still stay lit up bright white the whole time, which takes away from it's use for an alarm clock. Also, it says "weather information currently unavailable" and has failed to update, so that is bothersome. I thought it may be due to GPS being switched off, so I went to settings, and found that I no longer have the ability to control GPS location.

I'm happy with the fact that this enabled the use of flash, just in time for football season. And I like the new clock in dock mode. I'm not sure if I can live with this slow operation and quirkiness though.

ugh I'm so confused. I don't know which one I want. I have a stock droid running 2.1. I've never done anything to it besides accepting the OTA 2.1 update. I want to manually update because people in this forum said that manually updating produced fewer problems then the OTA update.

I thought this sounded simple, but now I've gotten so many different links and differing statements (bigger is better, there is no difference in sizes) that I don't really know which file to use.

PS I really appreciate your advice. sorry if this comes off as a little grumpy, I am just feeling overwhelmed.

I understand completely.

Link #1 is the exact same as receiving the OTA.

Link #2 is likely what will be used to restore bricked Droids (for now anyway), as it's the full FRG01B system. It should theoretically be a cleaner install because it doesn't just patch 2.1, it fully replaces it. The end result is still a Droid running FRG01B, though.

Link #3 is the exact same as #2, but you end up with root - and I posted that just because I couldn't remember if you wanted that or not from your original post.

I get your frustration, but that's the tradeoff for following a site like this with all the leak news, etc. :)

No problem, the link I posted is the link directly from google. Its the 45.2mb OTA update that is being pushed out. All you do by following my instructions is download it from google instead of waiting for verizon to tell you its your turn.

1st post here folks so hello to you all. I was growing impatient waiting for the ota update and then came into work to find 2 co-workers received it. At 4pm today my patience found it's end. I tethered and downloaded the file and did the upgrade manually. Working good so far. Took 5 minutes. Thanks to all who posted the info on the manual process.

you are a life saver! thank you so much! My droid is only at about 50% battery right now so I'm going to let it charge for awhile and then probably go with the Link#2--the larger file. Maybe I'm just gullible but a few detailed posts in the forum have convinced me it's better. I have one last question, can I use that link for either method of installing (download directly to droid or download on computer and connect with USB)?

again, thank you x 100000!
